Statement: "Bend in the River" is an exhibition organized by local artist, Joannie G., featuring artwork created by inmates from the High Desert State Prison in Susanville, CA. Over the last eight years Joannie has worked with the prison leading workshops in non-violent communication and through these workshops began to recognize the immense artistic talent of the men she was working with. This exhibition is a way for many of the incarcerated artists to reach out to the world outside of the prison and show that they are more than the mistakes they have made in the past, while also highlighting their ingenuity and innate drive to create within the strict parameters of materials they have access to inside the prison.
